Tvrdoš Monastery, Trebinje

4.5
Taste wines made in the centuries-long monastic tradition at Tvrdoš Monastery. Legend has it that the 15th-century Orthodox monastery was constructed on the site of an earlier church that was erected by Roman Emperor Constantine and his mother, St. Helen. You can still see the fourth-century foundations of the ancient Roman church. The monastery houses a 15th-century stone cellar and a new, modern cellar. Try to recognize the traces of peaches, kiwi, and honey in white wines and cherries or figs in red wines. The monastery also treasures an important relic--the hand of an unknown saint, probably the queen mother of Serbian medieval kings Milutin and Dragutin. Tvrdoš Monastery is just one of the many highlights you can arrange to see using our custom trip planner, Trebinje Edition.

  • The Monastery of Tvrdos has a long history of winemaking, with abundant sunshine, abundant water resources and a mild mid-season climate making it the world's top wine producer. Black-clad monks scrutinise the clothes of every visitor, and knee-length skirts and sleeveless clothes and skinny jeans must be wrapped in a shroud that the monastery can use at the entrance. Walk through a vineyard to the church, where the 16th-century frescoes are beautiful, but they can't be photographed. In Bosnia-Herzegovina, where the surrounding mosques are lined, there is such a group of monks who cling to the monastery that the monastery exists to this day. We came to the cellar and chose two wines to taste, 1.5 euros each, a velvet-like soft taste, a long and pleasant aroma around the mouth, and we decided to take home the two wines we tasted, and the abbey's gift shop sold a variety of wines.

  • First of all, one note. This is a convent with monks living and working here. This is primarily their prayer home, not the tourist place. Let's respect their privacy. The convent is beautiful and has a very tidy environment. They produce phenomenal wine. It is located on the foundations of the 4-century Byzantine church. Here you can buy a lot of the monasteries of this monastery and the products of honey and wine that the Brotherhood produces. Beautiful.
