Crooked Bridge (Kriva Cuprija), Mostar

#10 of 57 in Things to do in Mostar
Bridge · Hidden Gem · Monument
Crooked Bridge (Kriva Cuprija) was designed and built as a test model for the construction of the bigger and more famous Old Bridge. The Turks built the model to see whether a bridge with such a semicircular stone arch could withstand loads. The bridge was mentioned for the first time in the endowment of a wealthy merchant, Cejvan Cehaja, in 1558, which means that it was built at least eight years before the Old Bridge. Climb the stone steps on either side of the bridge and walk over its cobblestoned path. The arch is a perfect semicircle measuring 8.56 m (28 ft) wide and 4.15 m (13.6 ft) tall. Floods destroyed the bridge in 2001, but it was rebuilt on the initiative of UNESCO.
