Drukgyel Dzong, Paro

3.8
#5 of 8 in Historic Sites in Paro
Explore the hilltop ruins of Drukgyel Dzong, a 17th-century Buddhist monastery with a storied heritage. Surrounded by magnificent mountains, a well-preserved white brick watchtower dominates the scenery. The complex, perched over the Paro River Valley, ranks among the most important archeological sites in Bhutan. Built in 1649 to commemorate and capitalize on the victory against Tibetan invaders in controlling an important trade route, the dzong features a false entrance that lured Tibetans into a dead-end courtyard during their retreat. Some visitors have reported renovations in progress; you can still take a pleasant hike around the area, but check before going. • It was a fortress of defense, very near the Bhutan China border, offers majestic views of the valley. Was being renovated when I visited as it was in ruins for quite sometime.  more »
  • I visited this place out of chance. One of the locals informed us about this and me and my friend decided to check it out. It's quite far away from the city and even Tiger's nest. I went in here in 20...  more »

  • Best natural view feeling seems like watching heaven. Plentiful of nature's view.
  • Drugyel Dzong is not a very exciting or an amazing place in Paro. But its strategically located near Tibetan border that Bhutan shares with China. The place is quite a historical site commemorating Zabdrung Ngawang Namgyel's (unifier of the country Bhutan)victory over Tibetan forces. The fort's construction was done in 1649. At present the dzong is under renovation.. ...but one can feel the historical SMELL and sensations of the bygone past and struggles from its dismantled entrance and scattered ruins...and stony stair case...(if you are very sensitive.. of course.)..( ref to photos) 'druk' 'is the ancient name for bhutan 'gyel' means victory
  • Good place in natural view to visit in Paro, Bhutan
  • I will never forget it's mesmerizing beauty! A must visit place in Paro.
  • A good place to visit. Note the entry timings as you plan. The national museum is near by. Plan both of them on the same hill trip. Car park available at both places. Up here you can see the full Paro town.
