Chateau de Franchimont, Theux

Franchimont Castle is a medieval castle in the municipality of Theux, province of Liège, Belgium. It sits at the western end of a small hill overlooking the village of Franchimont.
It is thought to have originally been built in the 11th century, as a stronghold of the Principality of Liège. The original building was extended several times during the Middle Ages, once after a fire in 1387.
In 1487 the castle was besieged, and around the same period the La Marck family took ownership of it. In the early 16th century the outer wall was built, with casemates and an artillery tower added.
Today the castle is owned by the town of Theux and is open to the public. The artillery tower at the north-east corner contains a small exhibition and the ticket office.

  • We went to Franchimont Castle on the weekend of the medieval fair which takes place every two years. It's been great. The setting is very nice. It's worth a visit even without the fair. Parts of the castle are under renovation but accessible.

  • The entrance fee is 4 degrees. There is the possibility of having an audio guide or papers. The tour lasts a good big hour. It's nice, but don't expect a castle as you currently hear it. It is in ruins, you have to be very imaginative. The tavern outside, meanwhile, was closed (damage!)

  • Excellent place to do with kids if you run their treasure hunt too. Which is free and added to give the kids something to keep their interest. We had tons of fun doing it even with a six year old and a couple of teenagers.
  • Unfortunately the Chateau itself is closed between November and March. However we visited in December, and it was still worth coming and seeing. There are some nice views across the Belgian landscape on offer. Plenty of free parking, and I’m sure it is more alive when the Chateau is open.
