Chateau de Seneffe, Seneffe

The Château of Seneffe or Château de Seneffe is an 18th-century château located in the municipality of Seneffe in the province of Hainaut, Belgium. The château is property of the French Community of Belgium and serves as the "Centre de l'orfèvrerie de la communauté française" which displays a collection of antique (mainly 18th century) silverware.
In 1758 the 'Seigneurie de Seneffe' was bought by Julien Depestre, a Walloon merchant who earned a fortune by selling goods to the Imperial Austrian troops stationed in the Austrian Netherlands. Depestre's new status as a wealthy and influential individual was also confirmed by the acquisition of noble titles such as 'Seigneur de Seneffe' (Lord of Seneffe) and 'Count of Turnhout'. The new castle designed by Laurent-Benoît Dewez had to match with Depestre's new noble status. It was erected between 1763 and 1768 in a novel neoclassical style. When Julien Depestre died in 1774 the decoration of the château and the embellishment of the park were continued by his widow and his eldest son Joseph II Depestre.
After the French revolution and the subsequent occupation of the Austrian Netherlands by the French Republic, the extraordinary art collection (1797) and the château were confiscated (1799).

  • GPS is a must to get there. It's unbelievable. BUT, on the spot, it's all beautiful. The Interior is presented with a lot of sensitivity. We finish with the beautiful and pleasant Park.

  • Pretty exhibition, based on giant chocolate sculptures up to 3 m high for the gorilla. Presentation in the Orangerie of the Château, next to the restaurant (Côté rue de Courcelles). More than thirty beautifully crafted chocolate animal sculptures arranged in a jungle setting with homemade cocoa tasting, artisan chocolate, chocolate nougat, chocolate fruit skewers, chocolate champagne-Belgian speciality unique and delicious, to taste absolutely. surprising! Worth the visit at discounted price on the site with the code: Choco for young and old. Beautiful activity in bad weather until March 10 inclusive.

  • Chateau Seneffe was beautiful house and grounds. The house contains many superb rooms to educate about aristocratic life in the 1800s. Wandering the grounds, it is not difficult to imagine elaborate lawn parties and associated functions sick as the arrival of guests up the main road in their carriages. Highly recommend.
