The Curtius Museum is a museum of archaeology and decorative arts, located on the bank of the Meuse River in Liège, classified as a Major Heritage of Wallonia. It was built sometime between 1597 and 1610 as a private mansion for Jean Curtius, industrialist and munitions supplier to the Spanish army. With its alternating layers of red brick and natural stone, and its cross-mullioned windows, the building typifies the regional style known as the Mosan Renaissance. After a 50 million euro redevelopment, the museum reopened as the Grand Curtius in March 2009, now housing the merged collections of four former museums: the museum of archeology, the museum of weaponry, the museum of decorative arts, and the museum of religious art and Mosan art. Highlights in the collections include treasures of Mosan art such as a twelfth-century gilded reliquary tryptich, formerly in the church of Sainte-Croix, the Evangelarium of Notger, sculptures by Jean Del Cour, and a portrait of Napoleon Bonaparte painted by Ingres in 1804: Bonaparte, First Consul.

  • It was not a first time for us to attend this "vast" Museum, indeed the collection of weapons present in this museum made us discover that in the past our beautiful province of Liège was filled with a huge potential of gunsmiths and weapons manufacturers in our regions. What research and imagination had some craftsmen at the time of the 18s... without forgetting these magnificent engravings, a true masterpiece------PREVOIR a good day for this discovery in the weapons and their stories.

  • Museum with very varied collections, plan a real half-day to visit the whole. The building itself is beautiful, the reception of the staff is warm. A collection of weapons like I've never seen elsewhere. We travel in time, there is for all tastes!

  • Very good museum, the weapons is the part I liked the most, but the prehistory is also very good. Also not very crowded, it makes the visit much more enjoyable. There are locks in the entrance to keep your jacket, you need a 50 cent coin to use them.
  • It’s an interesting collection, worth visiting if you have time but perhaps not as satisfying as guide books and conventional wisdom seem to suggest. There’s a lot of stuff in here — some (like the Art Deco collection) great others more specialized (the extensive gun collection). The staff were extremely helpful but think about whether the hour is worth it versus other things you can do during your visit.
