Honoring the Canadian troops who fought at Ypres Salient in World War I, Sanctuary Wood marks the spot where the troops executed their first planned offensive against German troops. During the attack the Canadians regained territory at the top of the hill, denying the German troops a view of Ypres. Located just outside the city, terraced gardens lead up to the a gray stone block that bears the Canadian insignia. Walk up to the monument for an excellent view over the town and the landscaped gardens. Nice Museum, some pieces are Crica WW2 but had a great selection of firearms and cap badges. A great display with photos as well, they also had the British trenches preserved which was pretty neat. If you are interested in the battle of sanctuary wood July 2-4 1916 the battle happened in the woods across the street and there are still some small ditches from the trenches and shell holes there as well. The large pound was formed by the German mine.
We rented a car in Belgium and easily drove to France to visit this place of history. The museum has an interesting display of mutoscope, hand crank, stereo card machines, with WWI images. We only had an hour before they closed and rushed this section. I would have liked spend more time looking through the images. I was also suprised to see on display that people created art from giant shell casings! The highlight of the museum is walking through the WWI trenches. It really brings history to life to see this in person. It's hard to comprehend living and being at war in trench. It was an amazing experience and worth the drive.
