First foundationThe site has been occupied since the Merovingian period, and there is evidence that there was already a chapel here in the 10th century. In 1070, a group of Benedictine monks from Calabria settled here, at the invitation of Arnould, Count of Chiny, and began construction of a church and a monastery, but after some forty years, possibly because of the death of Count Arnould, they moved away again. They were replaced by a community of Canons Regular, who completed the construction work: the abbey church was consecrated on 30 September 1124.
In 1132, a group of Cistercian monks from Trois-Fontaines Abbey in Champagne arrived, and the two groups formed a single community within the Cistercian Order, under the first abbot, Constantin.
Abbaye d'Orval Reviews
A voir au moins 1fois dans sa vie. Cadre magnifique Ne pas oublier de déguster un orval accompagner de sa traditionnelle tartiner au fromage d’Orval more »To be seen at least once in his life. Beautiful setting Don't forget to enjoy an orval accompanied by its traditional Orval cheese spread
Magnifique, je dommage que tout ne soit pas visitable, mais c'est normal pour les moines qui y vivent more »Beautiful, I'm a pity that not everything is visitable, but it's normal for the monks who live there
Really very special place! Very beautiful ruins! The whole tour is done in a very pleasant way and tells a great story. I have visited some abbeys in Belgium, but I must confess that I was really impressed by this one. I understand why the people who live nearby, come back often.
Very impressive abbey with most interesting history and a very popular brewery on site. The monks started the brewery to help fund the maintenance & renovations of the abbey. Very worthwhile stop.
