Queen's Staircase, Nassau

4.1
Historic Site · Tourist Spot
Step back in time as you climb Queen's Staircase, a historic monument that honors Queen Victoria's lengthy reign. Built in 1794 of limestone rock using slave labor, the monument carries the name of the monarch who signed a declaration to abolish slavery in 1837. Ascend the 65 narrow steps to the top of Bennet's Hill, where you can admire the ruins of Fort Fincastle. • It's well worth your time to stop at the Queen's Staircase. Hewn out of solid limestone, make sure you get pictures from both the top and bottom. It's also better to go with a guide so you can learn....  more »
  • Walking there from the cruise port was super sketchy. Its near a new hospital, there are bathrooms there that you can tip a lady to use. The stairs and plants are neat but that is basically it. Lots.....  more »

  • During a cruise with the Nassau stop, it was time to (finally) look at the Queen's Staircase. We took a circuitous route through the streets of Nassau, which was NOT a smart move. The streets of Nassau are lacking a single thing to make the pedestrian tour experience enjoyable: sidewalks. During your walk, you will have to make decisions about timing street crossings with the cars storming beside you. You actually know that you are taking your life in your hands while walking. Also, you have plenty of locals sitting in their cars staring at you throughout your journey...and dead animals on the street. In the US, you could have made the experience much more safe and enjoyable with a 9mm in your pocket, but not in Nassau. There was absolutely minimal police presence. Anyways, the Queens Staircase was interesting. An old local woman was telling a story of the history at the top of the staircase. Her tales were worthy of as tip, true or not.
  • Very pretty! I would suggest taking a cab or taxi here from the port, we walked and there were some areas with no sidewalk which was a little scary since the roads were pretty busy and the drivers didn’t seem to slow down at all. The staircase has a lot of cool history to it, definitely listen to the man at the top who tells you the story! It’s pretty cool! Very pretty place, and something different to do that you can do fast (30 min or so)
