#2 of 14 in Historic Sites in Out Islands
Elbow Cay Lighthouse remains one of the few kerosene-fueled and one of three manually operated lighthouses in the world. Built from masonry in 1862 and standing 27 m (89 ft) tall, the tower sports horizontal red-and-white stripes. Its light, which is hand operated, is visible from 43 km (23 mi) away. The lighthouse features a weight mechanism, which the light keeper has to crank every few hours in order to maintain the light, which flashes every 15 seconds.
