Sigmund Freud Museum, Vienna

2.8
At Sigmund Freud Museum, get a glimpse into Freud's life and the development of psychoanalysis. Visit the rooms in which the father of psychoanalysis produced the majority of his writings. Freud lived and worked here for 47 years until June 4, 1938, when he went to England. See original furnishings, his personal items, the waiting room, and parts of his extensive antique collection. Founded in 1971, the museum features about 2,000 documents. The archive of images includes photographs, paintings, drawings, and sculptures, plus signed copies and first editions of his works. Watch the film material on the Freud family in the 1930s, which features a commentary by Anna Freud. Attached to the museum, you'll find Europe's largest psychoanalytic research library. • We visited the Freud Museum at its temporary location. The display is very minimalistic and not very informative to the knowledgeable visitor. However, the home movies screened in the little screening...  more »
  • The work at the "official" headquarters, the real house of Freud, will continue for a year. Before that, avoid going to the temporary exhibition in Berggasse 13, where there is absolutely nothing interesting but that, inexplicably, costs 9 euros for adults and 6 euros for students/young. It is shameful to say the least that they charge so much to see a notebook under a glass case, a video with a slideshow of old photographs, and two armchairs. To be avoided absolutely!

  • Well, it's definitely cheap, because it costs 3 euros if you're under 18. In the other hand there are just 3 rooms, the first one shows the waiting room in Freud's house, the second one shows small object, photos and various stuff from him. The last one shows a movie about him. In the hand I believe it's worth the price.
  • We went there earlier this week while they have the "moving Freud" museum. It's a really small museum at the moment but nicely done. I do believe that the price is too much considering that there are only two rooms you can walk through. Hopefully we'll be able to see more once the renovations are done. If you live close by I'd recommend waiting until the moving Freud is over.
