Secession Building (Secessionsgebaude), Vienna

#20 of 116 in Museums in Vienna
Secession Building (Secessionsgebaude) hosts art pieces from rebel artists, the most notable being Gustav Klimt. Completed in 1898, the building covers 1,000 sq m (11,000 sq ft) and is featured on Austrian coins of 50 eurocents. The architectural form is uncommon, with cubical shapes and a dome made of gilded laurel branches--initially referred to as cabbage head. Spend time at the main exhibit--the Beethoven Frieze, a 1902 work of Gustav Klimt--which illustrates a human desire for happiness in a world of suffering and evil forces. The museum constantly rotates its exhibits. • While the building is wonderful Art Nouveau, the star of the show is Gustav Klimt's Beethoven Frieze in the basement. The audio guide does a good job of explaining the Frieze. There wasn't much else t...  more »
  • I was going to visit this institution for a long time... Visited... For €9.5 looked a frieze of Klimt (chic thing), toilet and... And nothing else. "View to Failure" The bender's axis continues to live! I do not recommend categorically

  • We were hoping to see a lot of Klimt's works but the was actually very little. There's a huge piece in the lower part of the building which is impressive. The rest was audio/video pieces which weren't that interesting and looked to be filler at best. For us this was a waste of money and would not recommend.
  • Someone stole my umbrella in this museum. The lady in the front desk asked to leave the umbrellas there but when I realized they stole mine she said I am not responsible for that. To sum up 9.5€ for 4 exhibitions but only Beethoven frieze worth it. I really do not recommend this place.
