Schottenkirche, Vienna

4.5
Founded by Irish Benedictine monks who likely came to Austria in the 12th century, Schottenkirche remains one of the city's finest examples of Baroque architecture. Damaged by earthquakes and restored several times over the centuries, the highly ornate structure features a 19th-century facade and an elaborately decorated interior. The building's main feature is its fine frescoed ceiling, painted by artist Julius Schmid. Next door, you can visit a small art museum displaying various religious artifacts from the church's long history. Drop by the on-site shop, where you can pick up a jar of homemade honey or jam. • Schottenkirche is a roman.catholic parish church in Vienna's Inner City. Interior of the church is designed in high-baroque style and beautiful. I like this church very much.  more »
  • The Schottenkirche looks a bit barren from the outside, but is very decorated in the interior. She is a bit dark inside, but I found it very pleasant. As a result, the altar shines really nicely.

  • It was great to visit the church and the nearby museum. An excellent opportunity to learn something about Benedictines in Vienna.
  • Beautiful and special church. Too bad there was a metal grid preventing people entering in the actual church.
