Trip Planner:   Europe  /  Austria  /  Vienna Region  /  Vienna  /  Kaisergruft
Stand close enough to touch the remains of Austrian royalty at Kaisergruft--the final resting place of Habsburgs. The burial chamber beneath the Capuchin church and monastery has been the place of entombment for this royal family since 1633. It houses the bones of 145 Habsburgs, including 12 emperors and 18 empresses. Walk down the well-lit and airy chambers with bare walls. See how 107 metal sarcophagi range in style from puritan plain to exuberant Rococo. Enter the Maria-Theresia-Gruft--a domed chamber dominated by a huge, elaborate sarcophagus for the empress and her husband. Note how the plain coffin of Emperor Joseph II stands in remarkable contrast to that of his parents. • Visiting this crypt is essential to close the circle and understand classical Vienna. Funerary art full of ostentation by those kings who although despite a lot of turn queue, have left a universal legacy.
