Imperial Palace (Hofburg), Vienna

#2 of 510 in Museums in Austria
Once home to Vienna's monarchy, Imperial Palace (Hofburg) gives a fascinating look into imperial life through a display of personal items of former Habsburg monarchs. Along with the historical museums, the palace--called the Vienna Hofburg--now houses the president of Austria and offices of the federal government. In the Imperial Apartments, you'll discover the apartments of Franz Joseph and his wife, Elisabeth. Visit the Imperial Silver Collection for a glimpse into the lavish lengths to which the monarchs went to entertain. You'll see about 7,000 relics of the imperial dining culture, such as exquisite kitchen linens, the imperial table, and ornate centerpieces. The Sisi Museum features more than 300 personal items of Empress Elisabeth. Through her parasols, beauty recipes, and death mask, you'll gain an understanding of this often-misunderstood monarch. • The Hofburg Imperial Palace is an immense building expanded several times and what is visited consists of several parts: museum of silverware and crockery, imperial apartments (Sissi museum, which this name sells a lot) and museum of the imperial treasure, which is accessed by a independent door after crossing two patios. In the museum of Sissi they wouldn't let me take pictures, so I can't say much, as my memory quickly fades. The set is expensive, but worth it. You can download the audio guide in Spanish on your mobile. I recommend it. I was spoiled in the palace of the city and thanks to my mobile I was able to continue the visit quickly.
