Chapel of St. Virgil, Vienna

#37 of 105 in Historic Sites in Vienna
Religious Site · Hidden Gem · Historic Site
Witness one of the best-preserved Early Gothic interiors in Austria's capital at Chapel of St. Virgil. Covered by the ruins of the chapel of St. Mary Magdaleine, this subterranean chapel was rediscovered in 1973 during the construction of the Viennese subway system. Today, you can enter the chapel directly from Stephansplatz U-Bahn Station. Do not miss a collection of medieval objects at the entrance, mostly found in the excavation of the location. Once inside, pay attention to red Greek crosses painted in the alcoves. Audio guides are also available at the entrance.
