Petersfriedhof, Salzburg

4.6
Visit the catacombs embedded in the rock of the Festungsberg at Petersfriedhof, the oldest cemetery in the city. The oldest tombstone dates to 1288, but the catacombs most likely originate from the early Christian days. Walk through narrow passages, which probably served as hermitages and a burial site. Climb the staircase up to the two chapels. Enter the Maximus cave, the highest prayer room of the catacombs. Notice an arched grave that supposedly served as a stone bed. Between the two chapels, you can stand on a viewing platform with a small wooden bell tower. Many of the aristocratic families and notable people of Salzburg are buried here, including Mozart's sister, Nannerl, and Haydn's younger brother, Michael. Petersfriedhof is just one of the many highlights you can arrange to see using our online itinerary creator, Salzburg Edition.

  • Very poetic flower cemetery. Mozart's sister is buried there. As atypical as it may seem, as this is a cemetery, this place is a haven of peace.

  • Of course it is a cemetery, visiting it should make us think and make us understand that we are only passing through and therefore even visiting a cemetery is good.

  • A very pretty little cemetery. It also much cost a fair price or birthright to be laid to rest here. I did note they do accept new "customers" as a recent addition had their photo and fresh flowers on display in one of the cages. I probably should have watched the "sound of music" before going, because I swear a scene was in this area. Its a very pleasant walk, and they really keep the graves pretty with flowers. There is the option of going into the crypts for a fee, or with the Salzburg card, we opted out of this.
  • This is St. Peter's cemetery, the oldest cemetery still in use in Austria. St. Peter's wasn't actually used in the Sound of Music as some reviewers have said. The cemetery was re-created in a Hollywood studio and altered for the movie. All the scenes involving the Von Trapp family hiding in the crypt were done in on set. It's definitely worth visiting if in Salzburg though as it captures the feel of the film. The graves are all well kept with beautiful flowers and a great many has statues, which makes it a very interesting place to come and see. A very unique and beautiful place. Many notable Austrians are buried here, including Maria Anna Mozart, the elder sister of Wolfgang Mozart.
