A famous monastic site, Melk Abbey contains the remains of several members of the first Austrian dynasty and the tomb of St. Coloman of Stockerau. This Benedictine abbey was founded in 1089, although the current Baroque building was built between 1702 and 1736. You can take time to appreciate the abbey's frescos by Johann Michael Rottmayr and browse the library of medieval manuscripts. Located above the town with a view of the Danube, the abbey is surrounded by a large park. Join a guided tour to learn about the abbey's history as a school for young monks. Melk Abbey Reviews
Melk Abbey has a gorgeous baroque church and library. Either one of them would make visiting Melk a highlight of any trip to Austria. The baroque church is one of the most beautiful churches in Europe... more »
Schon die Anfahrt zum Stift Melk lässt erahnen, welchen Eindruck das grosse Haus auf frühere Reisende gemacht haben muss. Auch heute noch ist der Zugang letztlich imposant. Die Führung durch das Haus ... more »Even the approach to the Melk Abbey gives an idea of the impression the big house must have made on former travellers. Even today, access is ultimately impressive. The tour of the house was good, informative-but a little too professional. It sticks to being memorized. The young guide has not been able to show a little more flair to the history, some current life apart from a few episodes. What the monastery church offers in terms of music opportunities such as the organ and the like is also simply suppressed. Offering potential for good guided tours is still there without end. Nevertheless: Go and let yourself be pampered by the incredible buildings.
Definitely get the guided tour for an extra 2 euros which is an hour long and very informative. The abbey had a very interesting collection of things on display, such as a reusable coffin, books, chalices, and clothing. The murals were excellently detailed and exhibited baroque style at its finest.
Must-see. Well preserved monastery with lots of impressive artworks and exhibitions. I'm a big admirer of the library. You also get a great view.
