Underground Hospital and Museum, Mount Isa

Mount Isa Underground Hospital is an unusual and interesting piece of history. In 1942 with the threat of Japanese bombing very real it was decided to establish an underground hospital to be used if needed. Located in a hill behind the existing above ground hospital locals tunneled out and equipped the hospital. Visitors can walk through the tunnels and learn how the hospital functioned view medical equipment and furnishings from the original fitout. Also onsite with the hospital is the Beth Anderson Museum which has an excellent array of antique medical equipment. Worth a visit.

Had a wonderful visit , so interesting to think that all those years ago , after the Japs bombed Darwin that they could go further south and drop bombs on Mount Isa...The power's that be at the time came up with the brilliant idea of an underground Hospital. However it was never used as a hospital , but was a cool place on a hot Mount Isa day for nightshift staff to catch up on some sleep...
