Federation Square, Melbourne

#2 of 469 in Shopping in Victoria
More than a popular meeting spot in Melbourne, Federation Square serves as an entertainment destination in the heart of the city. Encompassing a city block, this plaza contains bars, restaurants, cafes, art galleries, and plenty of shops. You can rent a bike here and ride around the city, or depart on a boat cruise from the nearby dock. Check out The Ian Potter Centre: NGV Australia, holder of the world's biggest collection of Australian art. Of architectural note are the scalene-triangle sandstone building facades and ochre-colored sandstone blocks in the main square's paving. • A lovely place to visit for 30 seconds, taking in the unique architecture of the building surrounds, but then go on with your life. There's literally nothing to do here at all - sure, if someone was performing on the stage it would be good, but outside of that it;s just a big empty park with a museum that's closed for renovation (and sounds quite boring) and a cafe that's only open for about 2 hours every other day. Walk in, walk out, and do nothing more.
  • The square is across the road from Flinders Street Station's main entrance. After heading up a set of shallow stone stairs, you end up in the large plaza, which included a stage. I was there when it was empty and was able to look at the design on the floor. There were really interesting looking buildings lining the edge of the square, both in colour and shape. There are also a few dining areas around including Niska, the robot ice cream bar. I quite liked the games scattered around the square, as well as umbrellas and seating so you can just relax for a bit there. There is also a set of stairs that take you down towards the river side for a nice stroll.
