Chambers of The Black Hand, Lightning Ridge

Must see · Art Gallery · Museum
One of the more unusual attractions in New South Wales, Chambers of The Black Hand consists of a collection of more than 350 carvings and murals on the sandstone walls of a disused opal mine. The gallery’s resident artist, Ron Canlin, has carved a variety of images, including reliefs of the Last Supper, Atlas holding the world, and a replica of an Egyptian tomb. A jewelry shop can also be found in the mine, where you can purchase opal mined locally. Before you visit Lightning Ridge, use our trip planner to discover what you can do and see there.

  • This place is just plain weird, but I loved it. You get to visit a mine and a sculpture gallery all in one. You do need to book and you also need to wear a mask. their COVID practices are excellent...  more »

  • The carving level is 11.2 metres underground, the  100 year old mine is 19.6 metres underground, subterranean tunnels open into vast chambers.  The walls have over 700 eclectic carvings and paintings created by our artist Ron Canlin, the owner of this uniquely Australian attraction his talent is never ending. Chambers of the Black Hand is both a collection of sculptures, hand carvings, paintings and an informative and entertaining tour of an opal mine that has been worked for over100 years, learn how hard it was for the old timers that dug by hand.  Here you will get to see tunnels and shaft hand dug it is a very informative part of the tour. All of the guides are very passionate about the opal and mining and love to share tales of the olden days between the 6 guides they have 180 years mining history behind them. Trevor is very passionate and can tell you all about the opal plus combine his enthusiasm for opal mining and prospecting along with Ron’s passion for carving and art.. Complete your visit by calling in on Black Opal Jewellery Shop – also uniquely located 11.2 metres underground, It is the only underground shop in The Ridge
  • Amazing!! These sculptures are done with a fork and knife and the artist is down there often. He was sculpting Scott Morrison while we were there- of course the general opinion was that he had better hurry so he can start on the next PM! If you go to lightening ridge and you don't go down this mine and see this great work, then you have only skimmed the surface of The Ridge (so to speak)!
