Dog On The Tucker Box, Gundagai

#1 of 9 in Things to do in Gundagai
For over 80 years Dog On The Tucker Box, a historical monument and tourist attraction, has been a favorite resting place for travelers from around the world. Erected in 1926, the monument was sculpted by stonemason Frank Rusconi as a tribute to early European pioneers who settled this region. Inspired by a bullock driver’s poem, which celebrates the life of an allegorical driver’s dog that loyally guarded the man’s lunch box, the dog monument features a wishing well at its base, set up to collect money for a local hospital. Souvenirs of the famous dog can be purchased at a small shop nearby. • Dropped by quickly en route to Sydney via Gundagai. Cute little story and worth dropping by even if just to say you have stopped by. Well set up to exit highway for a quick look.  more »
  • Visiting the Dog on the tucker box is one of those things you need to do at some point in your life if you ever drive the Hume Highway between Sydney and Melbourne. It's kind of low-key, not flashy and now pretty much over shadowed by a highway service centre but still... At least you'll be able to answer 'yes', when someday, after an east coast road trip between Melbourne and Sydney, someone asks you, 'did you stop at the dog on the tucker box?' And that will be another stamp in your imaginary book of Strayan achievements unlocked.
  • When I came here 10 years ago I remembered that it was difficult to get to. Well that's all changed ! It's now right on the road and next to a service station and good store. Great space to pose your doggo and nice shaded area's. Lots of facilities
