Mungo National Park, a World Heritage Site covering 2,400 square kilometers (25,800 sq ft), incorporates seventeen dry lakes. The central feature of the park is Lake Mungo, the second largest of the ancient dry lakes. Archeological remains of the Mungo Man, the oldest human remains discovered in Australia, were found within this region. A visitor center, where you can find further information and maps of the area, is a convenient starting point for tourists choosing to drive around the park’s renowned Walls of China, a series of wind-formed dune shapes on the southern edge of the lake. Keep in mind that the roads to and around the park may become impassable during or after rain, so plan your visit accordingly. Make Mungo National Park a centerpiece of your Balranald vacation itinerary, and find what else is worth visiting using our Balranald day trip planning tool.
