Replica of the Brig Amity was built in 1975 to commemorate Albany’s first settlers, who arrived from Sydney in 1826. The settlers were part of a British Army expedition, led by Major Edmund Lockyer, who became famous for rescuing Aboriginal Australian women kidnapped and enslaved on the offshore islands by local sealers. Lockyer’s courageous rescue cemented the good relationship between native tribes and the European settlers. The full-size replica of the famous brig was designed and built as the focal point of celebrations held in honor of the 150th anniversary of the settlers’ arrival. Guided tours of this iconic attraction are available daily, but keep in mind that advanced bookings are required. • The first thing we stopped to check out during our holiday in fair Albany. The guide was very helpful and informative. She also recommended I take the ladder amidships when she saw that I had a knee injury which made climbing into the lower decks easier. A great experience.
  • A must see in Albany. This is a full size reproduction of the original brig Amity which brought the first settlers to W.A. It is amazing to think a ship of this size was capable of carrying so many people, livestock and as much foodstuff as it did. The audio guides make this an even more interesting experience.
