Adelaide Gaol, Adelaide

#5 of 19 in Museums in Adelaide
History Museum · Hidden Gem · Museum
Made famous by several alleged ghost sightings, Adelaide Gaol was the first permanent prison in South Australia, in operation from 1841 to 1988. The main prison building is one of the oldest structures in this part of the country. Now operating as a museum and a popular tourist attraction, the site introduces visitors to the harshness of inmate life and sheds light on the story of some of Australia’s first European settlers. Enjoy a self-guided tour of this old prison, and learn all about the seven public hangings held here in 1840, while the buildings were still under construction. Visit the prison’s "Hanging Tower," where the last four executions occurred before capital punishment was abolished in 1976.
