Tsitsernakaberd, Yerevan

4.8
Monument · Tourist Spot
A memorial complex near the Hrazdan River, Tsitsernakaberd commemorates the 1.5 million victims of the Armenian Genocide. First opened in 1995, the site draws scores of families and tourists to remember and honor those who perished in 1915, during one of world's most gruesome systematic exterminations of minority subjects. A striking 44 m (144 ft) stela dominates the forest-covered compound, symbolizing the rebirth of the nation. Visit the memorial wall with the names of villages and towns where atrocities took place, the eternal flame that pays homage to the fallen, and the informative museum-institute. From the terrace you can also see snow-capped Mount Ararat in the distance.
