An imposing and austere Armenian Apostolic church, Saint Gregory The Illuminator Cathedral dominates the city skyline. The massive cathedral complex was completed in 2001, on the 1,700th anniversary of Armenia's adoption of Christianity. It contains the remains of St. Gregory, as well as relics belonging to him--transfered here from Naples. Three churches make up the compound, notable for its arched bell tower and simple, modern architecture. The cathedral welcomes all to enter its unembellished interior, and imposes no dress code. It is located not far from Pza della Repubblica, next to it is a kind of Luna Park. Imposing externally, it is very modern inside, too "cold" for my taste.
Grand, quite, authentic place. The area surrounding the temple looks like it really needing to be more upkept. more »
Saint Gregory the Illuminator (c. 257 – c. 331) is the patron saint and first official head of the Armenian Apostolic Church. He was a religious leader who is credited with converting Armenia from paganism to Christianity in 301. Armenia thus became the first nation to adopt Christianity as its official religion. Bartholomew and Thaddeus brought Christianity to Armenia in 30 A.D. to 46 A.D. depending on what book or articles you read. So they established many pockets of Christianity. Even converting Kings and royal families. All before 257 A.D., so because he was the first official head of the Armenian Apostolic Church he gets all the credit. It's a nice church sitting on a small hill. The Saint Gregory the Illuminator Cathedral, also known as the Yerevan Cathedral is currently the largest cathedral of the Armenian Apostolic Church in the world. The church was built between 1997 & 200, holds 1700 worshipers and is 200 feet tall.
Amazing scale for this huge apostolic church in Yerevan. The arched ceiling are vast and the electric candles light up chandeliers in the domes. There are unexpectedly seats, but the church is relatively bare. It sits at the side of the park, but the gardens could be better maintained.
