Marvel at the age and design of the ancient tombstones at Noratus Cemetery, a historic early Middle Ages cemetery with the largest cluster of khachkars in the country. With over 800 steles with elaborately carved crosses, scenes of farm life, weddings, figures with professional insignia dating from the 9th to the 17th centuries, the cemetery is a majestic site set against a backdrop of snow-clad mountains in the distance. Today dotted with orange lichens, the tombstones, steles, and stones are all different one from another, testifying to the originality of their creators. Noratus Cemetery is just one of the many highlights you can arrange to see using our world travel planner, Noratus Edition.

Amazing place! I would never believe that this place has so many historic gravestones! I even read a story of the person who was buried there! It is incredible! I highly recommend this place for visiting!
Located 90 km north of Yerevan, Noratus Cemetery is a fascinating place. Here you will see a large number of ornate khachkars (Armenian cross-stones) erected for the salvation of souls, which have been listed as UNESCO Intangible Cultural Heritage. They are some of the most beautifully carved gravestones I have seen anywhere in the world.
