  • Although the guides of Italian and French Armenia mention it, with positive accents, there are very few tourists who go so far. And they hurt, because this monastery of the seventh century, destroyed and rebuilt until the twelfth century-and retouched in recent times, without doing too much damage as often happens in this type of restorations-, is absolutely worth the trip along the winding road in Very bad condition that comes to us. Yes, we need a 4x4 (we rented a niva with driver in Vanadzor), but it was rewarded by the beautiful scenic view from the top of this jewel, and by direct exploration. Also in this case, the monastery is different from any other spread for Armenian territory, and very suggestive.

  • In the translation from Armenian Khnevank means "old monastery", and it should be noted that this is a very relevant name. The monastery was built in the 7th... It is located on a hill in the gorge, where the rivers Dzzoraget and Gargar are joined. It is located on the right bank of the river Dzzoiraet. It offers beautiful views of the gorge. The main dome church is built of yellow tuff, dates back to the 10th, and is now fully restored. There is no one around and silence. The only thing, because the whole road (that from the monastery down, that then up the gorge) killed, in the pits and in addition, serpantin, you need something like Nivah or SUV, the bus will not go. If you descend to the monastery on the road leading down, then on the left there will be a inconspicuous plaque with the name, from it is better a little, meters 300, walk to the monastery on foot. But what kind of views are opened! This is one of the most vivid impressions of the trip.

  • I adore this monastery! It is situated near the river Dzoraget. Its location is perfect! The monastery itself was built in the 7-13th centuries AD.The Georgians may claim that this is a Georgian church. But its not! It has several Georgian inscriptions and Georgian crosses on its walls. One of them is right under the dome, which makes it really unique. And the other is on the Southern wall. These inscriptions tell us about the renovations undergone by the Zakarid rulers. And these rulers were not Georgian. Getting to the monastery is not easy, because the road to it is in terrible condition! I was hitchhiking there and one of the employees of the hydropower plant right next to the church took me there. I also swam in Dzoraget river. And that was an amazing experience!
