The Monastery of Geghard, Geghard

Listed as a World Heritage Site, The Monastery of Geghard allegedly shelters the spear--brought by apostle Judas Thaddaeus--which pierced Jesus during his crucifixion. Founded in the 4th century, the monastery complex was partially carved into a mountain, surrounded by towering cliffs and the Azat River gorge. Examine the elaborate structures with engraved khachkars--memorial stone stelas bearing a cross symbol. Enter the chapels, churches, and tombs located in the compound to observe the holy relics hidden amid rock-cut walls. Near the parking lot, vendors sell homemade sweet bread, dried fruit, treats, and souvenirs. • Located in the mountains, this cave monastery is very well preserved. To avoid groups of tourists, I recommend coming early to fully enjoy site. Nevertheless, the arrival of the many buses allows the activity of singer in the interior whose melodies greatly amplify the places

  • The name of the monastery means "Monastery of the Spear" and comes from the LonginA Spear, which has long been kept in the monastery. The monastery was founded here in the 4th century, and the monastery churches that came to us were built or carved into the rocks in the 13th century. The monastery looks mysterious and amazing, it seems to have grown from local rocks and is their natural continuation. A very beautiful place, ancient, overgrown with stories and legends.

  • One of the major touris spots in Armenia. A big religious complex carved inside the mountain. Quite impressive and well preserved. Listed as UNESCO Heritage site. A must see for sure :)
  • One of the most amazing churches in Armenia. It does get very busy sadly but you can always find a small hideaway place to pray and spend some alone time. A must for anyone visiting Armenia. The gorge itself is breathtaking views with a river that flows through and the caves all around the complex are amazing.
