Museo Maritimo y del Presidio de Ushuaia, Ushuaia

4.1
Housed in Ushuaia's spider-like former prison building, Museo Maritimo y del Presidio de Ushuaia tells the story of the city's seafarers and their irresistible yearning to explore the wilderness of Antarctica. Perched at the very tip of the continent, the museum captures Ushuaia's frontier-town atmosphere and the sense of intrigue about what lies in the waters beyond. Smell the salt in the air and feel the chilly ocean winds as you learn about explorers who colonized Argentina and the impact their arrival had on the area's indigenous people. The former prison complex houses several other museums worth checking out during your visit. • A waste. It could be much better. The entry is relatively expensive ($450). They should include in the entry price the guide audio ($50 extras). The place is spectacular, but they could propose to make it a little more interesting. In the souvenir shop there is no products related to the jail, it sells the same as in all the premises of the center.

  • The Museo Maritimo y del Presidio de Ushuaia is a way to learn about the history of the city. It is well informative, some prison wards are still preserved, and the part of the Maritime Museum also has interesting stories. The input value is $60, and that's why I don't think it's indispensable. For the price, the visit is not so worthwhile. If you don't like museums or have little time, focus on other rides.

  • This is a large and great museum that gives you the true feeling of what it was in past times. All the info is in English and Spanish. It has many sections (former prison corridors) with the history of the site, famous prisoners, the origin of Ushuaia and its links to the navy and Antarctic expeditions. It also has an art gallery with beautiful and well curated exhibitions, including an installation of penguins which was really beautiful. We spent nearly three hours in the museum. The entrance can be validated to return within 48 hrs.
  • Wonderful use of space, one ticket good for all museums in the prison, excellent value. The Antarctic Museum was excellent, the Maritime displays and models were interesting. Fine Art gallery wings were captivating. Ticket is good for 48hrs so I went back to finish what I could not on the first round. Would visit again 👍
