Trip Planner: South America / Argentina / Patagonia / Province of Rio Negro / San Carlos de Bariloche / Refugio Frey
Trek Refugio Frey along the Cerro Catedral, a picturesque mountain shaped by the weather into rocky towers and formations. Named after the hut at the top of the climb, the well-marked trail takes you along the weathered granite spires to the snow-capped peak overlooking a lake in the rock basin. Hike along small streams, forested areas, and finally through the snowy part of the trail that leads to the top. Enjoy the panoramic views along the way and have a refreshing drink at the hut (where you can even stay the night if you choose). The hike in takes 3-4 hours and gets more challenging in the uphill second half. Plan a San Carlos de Bariloche trip in moments using our itinerary builder.
Refugio Frey Reviews
We skitoured from Cerro Catedral via princesa and down the valley to Frey. Amazing area to skitour in, we had an 3 hour walk out with backpack and skies on our back. more »

You can also do it from the cohigues. I recommend going down there, because it's easier to downgrade than the ascent. Where the shelter is you can make edge and also skirt the lagoon. Also in the shelter you can stay to sleep, after registration and also eat at not-so-expensive prices.
Beautiful whether you want to stop by for lunch or stay the night. Very popular for rock climbing. You can bring your own gear or pay to use the facilities, which include bathrooms, a kitchen and meals. Be sure to book a place through their website if you want to stay in the hut or need a place to pitch your tent.
If you're not in shape take it easy and you'll make it, and I promise it's totally worth it. Priced are ok for a place in the middle of nowhere and people are nice! 100% would visit it again!
