Train to the Clouds, Salta

3.3
True to its name, Train to the Clouds will literary take you over the clouds, which touch the base of a dramatic viaduct hovering across a desert canyon. Argentina's most famous rail trip starts at Salta and continues through a valley and up mountains slopes, over turbulent rivers, and past the ruins of a pre-Incan settlement. The journey only stops in a dusty mining town and over a canyon 4,220 m (13,845 ft) above sea level. Ride through spiral tunnels and over bridges while listening to piped music and enjoying the scenic landscape and the railroad's engineering wonders. The service includes snacks and medical assistance, as well as vendors selling empanadas and coca leaves to help with altitude sickness. • A wonderful place worth seeing. We arrived from Salta to San Antonio de los Cobres by car, and boarded the train at noon. The tour takes approximately three hours to return to the departure station. Obviously the most striking thing is the La Polvorilla Viaduct. The train runs through it and then it comes back. Highly recommended. Eat light, take liquid and move slowly by height.
