Ever-popular tours to Lago del Desierto attract scores of visitors every year thanks to its unparalleled panoramic views and crystal clear azure waters flanked by verdant Patagonian forest. Trekking the area is a rewarding excursion, and tour companies usually offer guided walking tours of varying difficulty so do your research. Views of mountains Fitz Roy and Torre as well as glaciers and waterfalls surrounded by tall lush regional trees will greet you on your voyage. The lake has been the historical subject of a dispute of ownership between Argentina and Chile. Leave plenty of time for this trip as the mountain roads are difficult to traverse and could take as long as two hours to get there by car. We seek information in the tourist center next to the bus terminal and the girl who attends us informed that due to constant rain and snow on the way (she consulted something on the computer and informed us that she had denied enough on the way, although not snowy in El Cha Lten) The road could be difficult. She told us we could try, but we should be cautious, especially at the end of the road because there would be a climb.. Well, the route is 37km by car and, from the 15 km we start to come across a little snow on the track. Around the 20 km we passed through a point where the car almost jammed in the mud. At km 28 we came up with a climb and the car did not beat the snow (we were in a classic Corsa). I even had the chains to put on. But we were still not close to the point that she had said was difficult and the situation was already ugly, because the snow on the track was already passing 10 cm. So we understand that passing this point would only lead us to an even more complicated and we would risk getting trapped and , so we decided to go back. Therefore, the tip is to inform one of the 2 visitor centers about the conditions of the place and the access before starting the tour. In these centers they really give very precise orientations (we use for other days as well).

The road is good, with sectors where you have to travel very carefully but it can be done and it is worth doing. We got a copious snowfall that further embellished the ride. Cheer up and do it you have no waste!
A beautiful place with all the appeal of this area of hanging glaciers and lush vegetation and a whole history in litigation to establish the border boundaries and the property of the desert lake that finally remained for Argentina
