Trip Planner: South America / Argentina / Patagonia / Province of Neuquen / Junin de los Andes / Lanín
Scale a volcano on the Chilean-Argentine border when you climb Lanín. The scenery includes the volcano's snow- and ice-capped summit. The base of the volcano has a park area with restrooms and tour companies. For those feeling up to the challenge, hike up to the camp at 3,000 m (9,842 ft). This trek traverses volcanic rock and is devoid of any plant life. The second day of the hike takes you to the summit at 3,776 m (12,388 ft). The stunning view from the summit offers a look into both countries and along the Andes. For travelers who use our international travel planner, Junin de los Andes holidays become easier to arrange, with trips to the Lanín and other attractions mapped out and timetabled.

It was an amazing thing the level of snow that there was, still with few things to explore and visit the landscape and the imposing volcano itself from wherever you look. You can't stop looking at him. The path of gravel half destroyed more with so much snow and after the passage of buses, vans and cars, many of them Chileans, taking advantage of the Mamuil- Malal pass or Tromen pass to Chile that was the only one available after the great snowfall. Route 60, prior to gravel, is pretty good. There is a campsite, baths and supply although they were not enabled when we went through the snow.

You can also reach the foot of the volcano on the north face by route 60, almost every asphalt that leads to the crossing of the border with Chile. The volcano begins to be seen as soon as you leave San Martin de los Andes and along the route you can see it from different positions. We also had excellent views of the volcano when we made the navigation on the lake from Puerto Canoas, even though it was very cloudy and at times you could hardly see. For lack of time we didn't get to the north face. If you want to see both sides is advisable, at least if you are in San Martin dedicate two days. It is a place worth visiting, not only to see the volcano, but for the whole environment that is wonderful.
Thank you so much
Easy hike from the highway to upper small lake in the Chilean sector. Beautiful half day hike on a sunny summer day. Great atmospherics if clouds are blowing over the summit .
