Trip Planner: South America / Argentina / Capital Federal District / Buenos Aires / Obelisco de Buenos Aires
Built to celebrate the fourth centenary of the founding of Buenos Aires, Obelisco de Buenos Aires represents one of the city's central icons. Using pioneering construction techniques, a German firm built the monument in 1936--in a staggering 31 days. Nowadays it's surrounded by some of the most chaotic traffic in the world, as cars and buses hurtle down Avenida Corrientes. The monument serves as a convenient meeting point for locals and tourists alike, who gather there before heading out for a night on the town. I'm so glad this place still exists. I went here when I was about 16 and this week I had the great pleasure of returning once again with my daughter. Yes the focus had changed a little but it still services the same niche very well. Keep up the great work!!!!
The heart of all the Fiestas for Argentina. Stayed for a 3 week vacation by the Obelisk and saw all types of Festivals held here by the Argentineans. Lively at night some times and nice and quiet the others. Soon after the day ends you could see the streets wiped clean. Leaving not trace of the day. The Obelisk lights up in several colored lights under the moon. Even better view once you're up 8 floors or higher at your hotel.
