Get away from the heat and busy traffic with a walk among the blossoming vegetation of the Roman, French ,and Oriental gardens at Jardin Botanico. Opened in 1898, the garden features nearly 5,500 plant species, a number of sculptures, busts and monuments, as well as five greenhouses, including one designed in the Art Nouveau style for the 1889 Paris Exhibition. The most recent residents of the garden are stray cats, cared for by volunteers working for the local animal protection association. The garden, which was declared a national monument in 1996, also boasts a botanic library and a botanical museum. It's not big, but you can still lose 2 hours if you see it all with patience there... It's FREE! If you have time, it's worth the visit.
I find everything in this City to be much larger than expected. Wear comfortable shoes and take guide book, if like me you get stuck looking into locked buildings and don't read Spanish. Closes at 1700, so you need to make way to the ONE EXIT way before then. Only services a single hard-to-find comfort station; no education, or live help evident while we were there.
Relaxing place, good for a walk and to read a book, or just wander around appreciating the different kinds of flora. There's no entrance fee! There's a butterfly house, but be aware that it only opens from 12 pm until 13 pm on weekends and holidays :)
