El Ateneo Grand Splendid, Buenos Aires

#2 of 595 in Shopping in Argentina
Browse an extensive collection of books in a spectacular setting at El Ateneo Grand Splendid, a bookstore housed in an early 20th-century theater. The theater first opened in 1919, and was later converted into a cinema. Today bookshelves replace seats in the stalls and galleries. Ascend to the top floor for a bird's-eye views of the floor below. Look up to admire the intricate ceiling frescoes. The theater boxes remain, converted into reading nooks where you can peruse a book before you buy. On the stage and backstage area, enjoy a coffee or empanadas at the onsite cafe. Although the store primarily stocks Spanish-language books, they also carry a wide range of English-language titles. • I went to the bookstore in December and was crowded with tourists, yet the place is worth the visit for its beauty. The place is beautiful. Prices are affordable. They accept credit and money.

  • The building is beautiful. The internal architecture and layout of the articles is excellent and easy to access. Besides having a great coffee shop. It's worth a visit.

  • One of the world most beautiful book store you can find. Located on the main street by entering you feel like a normal book store until you go further which you can find a must see art on the wall and top of the wall. The book shelf was well synchronize and beautifully display. I would definitely recommend to go inside just to see even if you are not a big reader. It will be a place to mark in your check list! I have put a quick video for those who haven’t got the chance to visit yet!
  • Beautiful conversion of an old theatre into a bookstore. Well worth a visit to see the beautiful interior on the inside. However would be great if we could get a bit more history on the theater itself and why it got converted. Separately, the service at the cafe was very sub par. It took over 20 minutes and multiple attempts to catch the waitress's attention to put in our order and the cafe was less than a quarter full.
