Trip Planner: South America / Argentina / Capital Federal District / Buenos Aires / Catedral Metropolitana
Despite its undoubted importance as a religious landmark, Catedral Metropolitana is best known as the burial site of General Jose de San Martin, Argentina's celebrated national hero. You can see San Martin's sarcophagus at a mausoleum inside the church--note the statues of three women guarding the general and representing Argentina, Chile, and Peru. The somber cathedral, which looks more like a bank building from the outside, also contains the remains of other Argentinean war heroes. At first it didn't seem like a church, I knew when I saw pictures of Pope Francis in his doorway. I entered, it is not very sumptuous, and I took advantage to attend the mass that was being held.
Ingresar en la catedral de buenos aires es volver atrás en el tiempo, imponente, histórica y no dejen de visitar el mausoleo en donde descansan los restos del gral San Martín, custodiado por Granadero... more »Entering the cathedral of good airs is to go back in time, imposing, historical and do not fail to visit the mausoleum where the remains of the gral San Martín, guarded by Granaderos, rest. It is worth sitting on your benches and admiring every detail of its architecture. Come in and enjoy. In addition to being able to enjoy the good air.
The exterior is more in the style of the Pantheon (Rome), with corinthian pillars supporting the large triangular pediment. From the outside, doesn't look like a place of worship. But step inside and you are met with a number of beautiful altars aside from the main one. The mausoleum of Jose de San Martin is housed here, protected by two smartly dressed guards
The Greek style front-exterior and Roman dome made me thinking it’s a government building but it ends up to be a Catedral Church without single cross outside. What a surprise! The interior was full of the Baroque decoration. The mausoleum of General San Martín was solemn and elegant
