Though it feels like the middle of nowhere, the World Heritage Site of Timgad presents one of the most precisely planned settlements ever to exist. Today, mostly foundations remain of Emperor Trajan's 1st-century CE military colony, punctuated by several columns and arches. Walk around the site to find out just how much planning went into the town, with every house having a specific size and enough space left for walking between the buildings. Next to the entrance of the town, a museum displays hundreds of mosaics found here. Other than private residences, the town also included baths, a villa, a square, a church, and much more.
