Statue of Liberty National Monument, New York City

A gift of friendship from the people of France, Statue of Liberty National Monument long represented the first glimpse of the United States for thousands of immigrants arriving across the Atlantic Ocean from distant lands. The 93 m (305 ft) statue's large pedestal includes an interior exhibit explaining the significance of this icon of liberty and democracy. Designed by sculptor F.A. Bartholdi and dedicated in 1886, the statue represents the Roman goddess of freedom holding a torch and a tablet of laws. It's essential to book tickets in advance. "Pedestal" tickets give you access the inside of the pedestal, the museum, and the Fort Wood level. Reservations to visit the crown can fill up to six months in advance. Ferries depart from Battery Park, New York or Liberty State Park, New Jersey. Check the ferry schedules and leave plenty of time for the security screenings. • I recommend taking the free ferry boats that take you across to an island past the statue of liberty. This is worth the trip over, plus you can see the Brooklyn bridge aswell  more »
  • good to see this, and there is posters with history facts, but you have to pay extra for pedastal and crown  more »
  • It is very pretty, I recommend to take tickets in advance online for climbing to the Crown, since they have much to get and are not expensive, there are audio guides in any language and is thankful

  • Lovely historic place!!! Ferry ride was awesome!! We went in early morning hours... Ferry ride was very pleasant in the morning hours... If you are planning to visit, plan early... you cannot roam during noon in summer... you may need sunscreen etc during the day time.. there is big gift shop, even in ferry... Lovely snacks in ferry.. overall we enjoyed the trip.. don’t forget to collect the audio guide!! It was crowded all the time!! Be ready to stand in queue for a minimum 30 minutes, while going to the island and while coming back..
  • The world famous statue is a must see! Was great to be able to see it up close. Tried to get tickets to the Crown but they sell out far in advance so get planning early. Facilities on Liberty Island are great. Gift shop, cafe, restrooms, drinking fountains and even one specifically for re filling water bottles! Statue Cruises boat doesn't take long to get to and you can get some great pictures from in when coming up to the island.
  • So fantastic to see the Statue of Liberty! Did not get off on the island, but seeing it from the water taxi was so worth it! From what I understand, you need to make reservations about 6 months in advance if you want to visit Liberty Island or to go up in the statue. We did not have time to plan for that but maybe next time. What an amazing monument to see!
  • What an amazing experience!!! With the ferry ride you already get an amazing view of New York, Lady Liberty and Ellis Island. Make sure you book in advance. The audio tour was absolutely amazing. It was short and sweet and informative. Take your time and don't rush! Buy the Statue of Liberty copper coins as a souvenir.

Where to stay in New York City

The first step to finding accommodations in New York City is finding the right neighborhood. Manhattan, where most visitors end up, offers some of the most expensive rooms in the world, though there are lower-budget options, such as hostels with shared restrooms. Reduce your costs by basing yourself in one of the outer boroughs, but beware of low-end motels where you may end up sharing the premises with hourly customers. Alternatively, stay along the New Jersey shore, offering all the major chain hotels at considerably lower prices than their Manhattan equivalents.
