The Art Institute of Chicago, Chicago

4.8
Developed from a free art school and gallery started in the 1860s, The Art Institute of Chicago now holds a permanent collection of more than 300,000 artworks. One of its most beloved paintings is George Seurat's Pointillism masterpiece "A Sunday on La Grande Jatte." Exhibits spread over eight buildings include Impressionist and Post-Impressionist art, with additional holdings of Old Masters, European and American decorative arts, and industrial and graphic design. Highlights include paintings by American artists Grant Wood and Edward Hopper, as well as Monet, Renoir, Cezanne, Matisse, van Gogh, and Picasso. The main building itself counts among the city's major landmarks, featuring two bronze lions guarding its main entrance. Check the online calendar for special events and temporary exhibits, which often require separate time-stamped tickets. Save time by purchasing your tickets in advance. Because the museum covers so much ground, it helps to map out exhibits you particularly want to see before you start exploring. • Museum is one of the best in the world. . Great paintings and collections to view. Valet parking makes it easy to bring handicapped visitors and also have wheelchairs if needed. Coat check available for free. Staff is very helpful especially maneuvering a wheelchair since some floors take a couple elevators to get to because it's an old building but they know all the routes. Food was okay and over priced. Liked they had adult beverages. I am a member and they offer a lounge for members with free coffee and tea. Doorway not accommodating for a wheelchair and furniture in the lounge was very low to the ground so elderly and handicapped could not use. Tried to bring my free coffee out to the other side of the cafeteria and was told you can't bring it out. Wish they would have thought about accommodating the elderly/ handicapped better. More benches would also help in the museum.
  • The Art Institute and the Chicago Symphony (right across the street) are Chicago's two truly world-class cultural attractions. With the recent addition of the Modern Wing, the Art Institute may be the best place in the world to experience superb examples of the full range of painting and sculpture, from ancient sculpture and ceramics to modern, post-modern and digital. The collections include (what some say is the world's richest representation of) French Impressionists, arms and armor, textiles, the Thorne miniature rooms (dollhouse-size accurate representations of famous American and European rooms), furniture, the Calder windows and, of course, a great collection of Picasso paintings and sculpture. My personal favorite is the Hall of Buddhas and the large hall of Hindu and Buddhist sacred art. If you have limited time, the map will guide you to your areas of interest or to the most famous works. If you go to the Modern Wing, go directly to the third floor for the permanent exhibition.
  • Not much you can say bad about a world class art museum. They have some of the most important works here. The impressionist exhibits are worth the trip alone. I also found the modern art section to be moving, even if it did not have the most well known works. This museum would take a week to catch everything. 3 hours was only a tease for me.
  • Paintings that I have studied for years were finally in front of me. I spent an entire day, open to close, and still did not cover the entire museum. Plan to give it the whole day (that's what I was told and figured I could do it in less - no way) and wear comfy shoes. The museum is beautiful, and steps away for Millennium Park, so it's in a great location. My only complaint was that they would not allow me to wear my small backpack on my back. I had to wear it on my side all day. While it's not the end of the world or anything, it was uncomfortable and difficult to manage all day. I understand the reasoning behind it, I just wish I had know before hand to bring a different bag.
  • Great museum and good pricing for Chicago/Illinois residents. Has a good selection of art and is always a great visit. I usually do 2-3 hours at the Museum and although I've been there more than 20 times it is still interesting. It's also great that the big exhibits change seasonally. Compared to some other large art museums it is definitely smaller (comparatively it is slightly smaller than MOMO).
