The National Museum Bangkok, Bangkok

3.7
#8 of 45 in Museums in Bangkok
Go on a journey through thousands of years of Thai history and culture at The National Museum Bangkok, a treasure chest housed inside the former palace of Siamese viceroys. Originally established in 1874 by King Rama V to showcase his father's private collection of artwork, the museum now ranks among the largest in Southeast Asia and displays various aspects of Thai heritage. You can admire everything from precious stones to ornamental clothes, and from prehistoric artifacts to royal thrones. In addition to the rich Thai collection, the museum displays objects from other parts of Southeast Asia and China, including weapons, sculptures, and musical instruments. Information in English and multilingual tours provide context for visitors without knowledge of the Thai language. We went to the national museum because we had seen that there was possibility of guided tours Wednesday and Thursday at 9:30. And I again thank Elodie our passionate guide to thai history who knew how convey us the essential in no GST even though the tour lasts more than 2 hours. Children (13 and 10 years old) really enjoyed his explanations. I would add that the guides are volunteers after a long training. So doing these visits with envy! Then you go with guide

Not very big and crowded Museum, contains important sculptural findings from the most important sites of the ancient Siam. Well worth a visit.

A place where several artifacts collected from several modern era. Some pieces are antiques that we are familiar. But some of the pieces were never seen at the exhibition? Painless journey. Tourists are not suitable for use as a source for learning the history of Thailand.

Really good place to witness the proud culture of Thailand. Art, Religion, Life style, Culture, History all in one place.. Not everyday they provide guided tours but if you go with a guide you can learn many things.. If you are a history lover like me then this place is like a heaven.. 😃

The visit to this museum can be greatly enhanced by taking a tour in German, Japanese English etc on Wednesdays and Thursdays at 09:30. The exposition itself is interesting but lacks information signs to place things in a historical context without a tour.

Pleasantly surprised by the quality of the exhibits here. Entrance fee 200 baht. Buddha sculptures and artifacts dating 1000 years ago. Exchange for a free audio guide at the counter using your passport. Visit the war chariot workshop which is currently doing restoration on the chariots for the funeral of late King Bhumibol in October this year. Word of cautious tho. Ignore if you are approached by a man in black at the front gate telling you about suit making. He's a scammer and the museum should look into this.
