#8 of 73 in Museums in Bangkok
Go on a journey through thousands of years of Thai history and culture at The National Museum Bangkok, a treasure chest housed inside the former palace of Siamese viceroys. Originally established in 1874 by King Rama V to showcase his father's private collection of artwork, the museum now ranks among the largest in Southeast Asia and displays various aspects of Thai heritage. You can admire everything from precious stones to ornamental clothes, and from prehistoric artifacts to royal thrones. In addition to the rich Thai collection, the museum displays objects from other parts of Southeast Asia and China, including weapons, sculptures, and musical instruments. Information in English and multilingual tours provide context for visitors without knowledge of the Thai language. • The entrance is 200 b pP comprehensible. Come on time (Wednesday, Thursday) and seizes the chance to join one of the offered free guided tours. The guide is in English, German, French, and an Asian language (Chinese, Japanese? I don't know sorry!) offered by volunteer volunteers (9:30 h - only Wed, Thu - before ticketing, tour with only ticket understands launched himself). You can tell the guides are here with full heart, we were just excited and without all this information, we'd probably split the opinion of others here, described the Museum as incredibly boring. The guide shows you individual exhibits and get an insight into Buddhism and the history of the Thai people. Really exciting! Thanks to our super friendly Director Elsa, we have the 2 h (slightly extended due to us than usual, it is possible but of course at any time earlier) really enjoyed and absorbed all the information only in us! Let's each only at the heart of a museum visit with guided tour! :)

  • Amazing place to see history of Thailand. Place is very well maintained and descriptions are in detail. Easy to reach. Museum is divided in sections based on type of sculptures. One of the must visit places in Bangkok. Definitely will recommend.
  • This museum is worth a visit if you want to get an overview of the ancient history of Thailand. We visited at the end of December and there was  Japanese exhibition that shows the relationship between Thailand and Japan over centuries. It also shows the different types of tea ceremonies. Entry fees is bht 200 and is free on New Year holidays and opens from 8:30 -16:00. There is also a section that shows the royal chariots, textiles and burial sites. Some parts are closed for renovations.
  • Lots of beautiful pieces of art but more than half of the exhibits were closed for construction and the ones that were open lacked in explanations and flow. It could be laid out much better to explain the various stages of Thai history but instead it's seemingly random
  • Located in Grand Palace area houses many fine examples of historical Thai and Buddhist art. Great buildings. Excellent displays. Take a guided tour Wednesday or Thursday morning.
  • The museum is best appreciated with a guided tour, which runs twice a week in five different languages. Our English guide, Anita, was exceptional. She spoke with passion and rigor unlike anything we experienced before. The museum provides interesting insight into the royal family and Thailand's intersection of Hindu and Buddhist cultures.
