The stadium was, before June 1994, known as the Khettarama Cricket Stadium and is today one of the main venues where the Sri Lankan cricket team play, having hosted more than 100 one day international matches. It is the largest stadium in Sri Lanka with capacity of 35,000 spectators. It has capacity exceeding Lord's Cricket Ground. It is nicknamed "Home of Sri Lankan cricket". It was also the stadium where the highest Test score was scored.HistoryEarly historyThe stadium is the brainchild of the late Sri Lankan president Ranasinghe Premadasa, who championed the development of this 40,000-seater concrete bowl, the biggest stadium in Sri Lanka. Opened on 2 February 1986 with a match between a Sri Lanka 'B' side and an England 'B' team, the stadium was built on swampland previously used by monks ferrying across to the Khettarama temple adjacent to it.Ground historyThe inaugural One Day International was played on 9 March 1986, Sri Lanka v Pakistan. On 28 August 1992 it hosted its inaugural Test match between Sri Lanka and Australia. The venue is best remembered for holding the world record for the highest Test total – 952/6 declared by Sri Lanka against India in 1997/1998 in which former Sri Lanka captain Sanath Jayasuriya scored 340 and Roshan Mahanama 225, the pair sharing a partnership 576 for the second wicket, at that time it was the highest for any wicket in a Test Match. On 10 February 2009 it hosted inaugural T20i match between Sri Lanka & India as well as 1st T20i to be played in Sri Lanka.

  • It is reallly nice when it is fully packed. Lower blocks like B, will give more interaction with players. Book your tickets early. There are some seats which has a poor view because of pillars. And avoid first 4-5 rows of the lower blocks of you want to have a clear view without the fence. Recommend to go early and get seated; find your seat will be difficult where seat numbers are invisible when someone already seated. And there is a high chance of your place has already been taken. Bring water bottles has prohibited. There are water taps inside and water bottles to sale for higher price. Staff is helpful. Wash rooms also OK.
  • Everything was good but the seating arrangement can be a little more specific. It was hard to view a seat number from a distant. Maybe a colour code can be used. Other than that, it is one of the best places for a quality view of a game!
  • Excellent atmosphere when full packed. A little hassle at the entrance due to the unavailability of parking. It is advisable that, anyone coming by private vehicles, park them somewhere away from the ground where it is more secure. Parking available around the ground is not recommended. The management shall take action to restrict the people who smoke inside the pavilion. This will make everyone, equally enjoy the rich atmosphere of the games played here.
  • A good cricket stadium at a convenient location. Often gets crowded when matches are there. The surrounding is a bit risky so always be careful of your valuables. If you are parking your car, park it at a car park. Went here for a few world cup matches and had a lot of fun.
  • Good, fairly fine view from C and D upper levels. C lower or D lower not recommended. A and B stands can view score board. But you have to pay premium. Most preffered C and D upper. For evening, parts of B and C stands get direct sunlight
