Hanuman Dhoka, Kathmandu

4.3
Step into the cultural history of Nepal when visiting Hanuman Dhoka, a long-time Hindu pilgrimage site. The location was heavily damaged by the 2015 earthquake that hit the region, though repairs have restored many buildings and reinforced others. Originally built with only one wing of the current area in the mid-16th century, the rest of the complex was added building by building by monarchs and ministers over the next three centuries. See where the royal family was housed for years, and walk through history to learn about Hindu beliefs. • Surprisingly, the area is large enough, even by our European standards. Most of the area given to traders. The only place in Kathmandu, where traders appeared somewhat harassing. Many stray guides offer their services. Especially offering reverse Freak Street-a place popular among hippies in 60-70-x: "... Bob Marley himself lived there ". Street departs from Plaça immediately-absolutely no different, no Street will take sometime Special popularity with peace hippie ...

  • Historical place as well as beautiful place. It's a palace to malla Kings then taken by shah kings after they conquer over malla Kings. This place is true work of art. We can see lots of carvings related to gods. The temple made from single tree kasthamandap lies here but due to earthquake it is destroyed completely. Recently government are rebuilding these structure to it's original form. It's a UNESCO world heritage site too. Lots of tourist visit this place for the art and history. It's a home to living goddess Kumari. In festival of dashai special celebration is done. Due to easily reachable location it is popular among many people. The Durbar Square are is actually made up of two sub-areas. The outer complex is renowned for numerous interesting temples as Kumari Ghar , Kasthamandap , Shiv-Parbati Temple, Jagannath Temple, Big Bell etc ,while the inner complex comprises the old palace area ,Hanuman-dhoka and its courtyards as Nasal Choke ,Mul Choke ,Sundari Choke, Basantapur Durbar and other. Besides the magnificent temples and shrines, it has other interesting aspects are various festivals , cultural activities and traditions people are following from centuries, which are presented in the Durbar Square. The major festivals include Indrajatra, Dashain, Gaaijatra, Machchhindra-nath jatra ets. These are the occasion when the people from all over the city gather here to mark their centuries old traditions. All the carving and architecture in this area are exceptionally fine which make the architecture in this Hanuman-dhoka Durbar square among the most important sights for travelers to see.
  • Nice place. I enjoyed so much
  • Kathmandu's royal palace, known as the Hanuman Dhoka, was originally founded during the Licchavi period (4th to 8th centuries AD) but the compound was expanded considerably by King Pratap Malla in the 17th century. Sadly, the sprawling palace was hit hard by the 2015 earthquake and damage was extensive. At the time of research, the main Nasal Chowk courtyard was open but the palace buildings remain closed for reconstruction.
  • Hanuman Dhoka is a complex of structures with the Royal Palace of the Malla kings and also of the Shah dynasty in the Durbar Squareof central Kathmandu, Nepal. It is spread over five acres. The Hanuman Dhoka Palace (Hanuman Dhoka Darbar in Nepali) gets its name from the stone image of Hanuman, the Hindu monkey god, that sits near the main entryway. 'Dhoka' means door or gate in Nepali.
