St. Mark's Square
Venice's principal public space, St. Mark's Square has served as the city's social, religious, and political center for centuries. In fact, Napoleon called the square "the drawing room of Europe." It's the largest square in the city and the only one given the designation of "piazza" (the others are all called "campi"). Originally constructed in the ninth century as a small public space dotted with trees, the square was substantially enlarged in the 12th century and was paved with bricks in the 13th. Several major architectural sites surround the area. The most notable is an imposing church dedicated to St. Mark. Don't feed the pigeons--city law forbids feeding the birds in the square. Piazza San Marco è incantevole, a tutte le ore del giorno! Un posto magico che ti lascia senza fiato! more »
Piazza San Marco is lovely, at all hours of the day! A magical place that leaves you breathless!View original -
The square is a really nice spot to take pictures. Beware of those guys with food feeding the pigeons though. They'll try to scam you! more »

Stunning square! A beautiful centerpiece for Venice. The tower was a highlight, it cost €8 to get to the top but the views are just incredible. The whole of Venice and more easily viewed from the bell room. Now St. Marks itself was a touch disappointing due to my views on how the Catholic Church handles donations and such but absolutely no doubting how awe-inspiring the architecture is. Not quite Rome though...

One of the most famous historic places in the world. The Venetian call it just «la piazza». The French emperor Napoleon called the Piazza San Marco "the drawing room of Europe". Whenever I am there I imagine to feel some famous and most important European or world history passing by....! Actually, the main problem today is the huge amount of tourists from all over the world and the sky rocketing prices for a caffè latte or a simple espresso.

Beautiful place. Lots of tourists and of course pigeons - we were lucky to see a photo shoot for D & G fashion house - pretty models - lots of takes - editing people in the back looking at proofs - security keeping people away - great atmosphere. We also went to local restaurant at night and enjoyed a 3 piece band under the venetian moon. Will come back. Loved it. Highly recommended

St. Mark's Square and the Basilica. What a beautiful place to visit, with fine architecture, a wide open space with eateries and even a harbour down past the Doge Palace. We spent the whole day walking round Venice and managed to walk nearly 7 miles, just wondering. I would highly recommend visiting and walking round the square. Venice has great offerings and this is definitely one of them.

Beautiful plaza located in the central heart of Venice. The cathedral overlooks one end and is quite the spectacle to look at. The architecture around the entire plaza is very similar and is beautiful to look at. Everyone pretty much stops here when they visit Venice because of the boat transports that drop everyone off right outside of the plaza. There are several local and brand name stores surrounding the plaza if you're looking to go shopping too!
