Scuola Grande di San Rocco, Venice

4.7
Admire the majestic facade of Scuola Grande di San Rocco but be sure to go inside and look up. The large 16th-century wall and ceiling paintings by Tintoretto have led to comparisons with the Sistine Chapel. Originally built between 1489 and 1508, the church was overhauled in 1725. The rarely crowded church is next to the better-known Scuola Di San Rocco, also known for its Tintoretto works. Note the church has a dress code, with no shorts allowed. • An expression belongs not to me. I read it in a wonderful book Arcadia Ippolitova "Only Venice. Images Of Italy 21. Tintoretto did not give rest thank Michelangelo, and he created the miracle of painting Skuoly Grande di San Rocco. A luxurious scenic decorations barely visible through the glass door. But it is only a small part. Ceremonial Hall is located on the second floor. And if the price of the 10 euro you think is too high, do not feel sorry for them, you won't regret it. This is really an amazing place. Firstly, because the Holy Rocco is one of the main backers of Venice, he was looking after the sick and plague of Venice, with its promenade Incurable, Salute Church (built in honour of ridding the city of the plague), venerates the Holy not less than St. mark. And Tintoretto, who wrote a lot of the churches in Venice, and sometimes not very thoroughly here really, really tried. This is the best Scuola Grande di Venezia, one of the major museums.

  • This place is spectacular, not quite a museum more just a display of incredible Renaissance art, I'd never heard of the artist before but his work is amazing. In particular the large depiction of the crucifixion. I don't think I've been in a building as beautiful - the Sistine chapel is pretty special bit out l think the stories of this place having never heard of it makes it a little better Only cost me €10 - worth a lot more than that
  • Audio guide and helpful maps for a fee certainly add to the experience of understanding what you're seeing. I was surprised to learn ALL the paintings were painted solely by Tintoretto and how self confident he was that the elders would commission him for the job.
  • Amazing paintings and sculpture. Easily spend an hour or two here. Shop and toilets. Good value to see so much tintoretto in one place.
  • Tintoretto's Sistene Chapel. This place is gorgeously opulent in a very Venetian, slightly dark way. Every surface is either carved, inlaid, or painted. Lots of gilding. If you only go to a couple art destinations in Venice, this one and the Accademia are the spots you should visit. There are mirrors you can borrow on the second floor to look up at the ceiling without craning your neck.
  • This museum was a lot of fun. After spending days in museums full of paintings (mostly of Madonna and child,) this museum was a nice relief. It is interactive, and very informative. It doesn't have any of Leonardo's actual world, just copies or digital representations. But they have actual models of inventions that da Vinci realized, many of which you can play with. They also have tables to build architectural items. The VR experience is interesting. Make sure you go upstairs to see the interactive areas. It's 8€ to get in, and they have a reduced rate for students. They aren't included with the Venezia Unica card, but they do have a discount if you have one (5€)
