Doge's Palace, Venice

#1 of 76 in Museums in Venice
Take a behind-the-scenes look at how Venice used to be run at Doge's Palace, which once served as the residence of the doges, the city's chief magistrates. Regarded as a masterpiece of Venetian Gothic architecture, the palace is now a popular museum, attracting more than 1 million visitors each year. Works by such artists as Titian, Veronese, Tiepolo, and Tintoretto fill the interior. You can explore the monumental council chambers and richly decorated residential suites where major decisions affecting the city's fate were once made. Look in on the grim prison cells where the doges' political opponents were often locked away. A ticket for the nearby museums also grants access to this palace. Explore your ticket options online, and book well in advance to avoid standing in long lines. • Tintoretto overload. Well organised and signed route through the palace - although the signs at the queues out front need improvement. We couldn't see the small signs to join the middle queue as we al...  more »

  • A place that leaves you speechless! It's like one of those movies of ancient Venice. It's huge and it takes a while to visit, then rabbit to go there early in the morning and see him calmly, preferably with an audioguide. We had booked our tickets before so we cut the line (I recommend!). There is a path leading in boardrooms before and in the Armory and prisons then, also going to the bridge of sighs! I will definitely visit this time also the secret passages and gli alloggi del duca, who had a ticket.

  • To appreciate the wealth and power Venice once had a visit here is a must! Having visited Venice before I saw it as a beautiful tourist spot, but was ignorant to its history. Seeing the craftsmanship and elegance of the Doge's Palace helped me to understand the vast wealth and power it had as an empire. Like anywhere in Venice, the earlier you visit the smaller the queues tend to be. Once you are in the palace, even when it is busy you are able to wander around at your own pace without being over crowded. Seeing the bridge of sighs from the prisoners point of view is worth the entry fee alone.
  • Ninth time here, still awe-inspiring. We had a great time here early in the morning. As last-minute tourists, we had the opportunity to do proper research before booking our tickets, so we knew what would be closed for sight-seeing. I can see how for people booking months in advance, this place could be disappointing, considering it seems to be in a perpetual cycle of renovations.
  • No heating system! No advise! visit its amazing but in winter is too cold.!!! No advise no free tee it's not admitted that they don't think to help the people with hot drink. Or some other. It's crazy leave tourist without help. Hope they reading and consider to change the political for the winter. Tee it's cost only few euro for 100 people.!
  • We had a great time here this morning. i will start with the one and only problem we had with this Palace and it is understandable. Most of the Armory was closed!! we couldn't believe it. we went up to the armory and we could only go in the first room. after that it was closed for work man to do something. there was no information posted about it so we would know before entry or any apology for necessary work being carried out kind of notice next to where it was happening. The rest of our trip was great though. we enjoyed the paintings on all the walls and ceilings and the copious amounts of gold filigree that went into all the art work. the amount of rooms you can walk through is staggering and not to many stairs all though you could get lost in the prison with its maze like walk ways and very little signage on where to go or which way to walk around.
  • A must see in Venice. Such a beautiful palace with so much history! Make sure to read all the signs around the place to really understand the purpose of each grand room. The ticket includes a number of decent exhibitions within the palace and also passage into the old prisons. Recommend buying a ticket online as there can be a queue. It’s well worth the 20€.
