Canal Grande, Venice

4.7
#1 of 5,469 in Parks in Italy
Ride a gondola or water bus down Canal Grande. A major water-traffic corridor, it winds through the city's central districts. Along its banks, you can see more than 170 buildings, including several palaces. Most of the buildings were erected between the 13th and 18th centuries, reflecting the prosperity and art of the once-powerful Republic of Venice. Forming a kind of reverse S-shape, the canal probably follows the course of an ancient river, eventually emptying its waters into a lagoon. The canal is 3.8 km (2.4 mi) long and 30 to 90 m (98 to 295 ft) wide. Centuries-old traditions, such as a historical regatta, are held every year along this ancient canal. • The Grand Canal is really pretty and if you visit, you must ride in a Gondola. Its an amazing experience and really fun too.  more »
  • Very nice. The vaporetto is good choice of 24 hour s. It is free during that time but dune 75 minutes

  • The trip in the canal is a must, it is very expensive though and not long enough. The guide mainly talks about the old city on the trip, avoid going early morning, the water stinks of sewage.  more »

  • This hotel has the best location. Close to transport to/from Venice and main hub of station and vaporetto lines to most parts of the city and beyond. Despite its shabby chic exterior, we found the breakfast areas and bedrooms clean and with all the basics you might need. The staff were excellent for both their friendliness and efficiency. It doesn't have all the frills but we wanted someone well priced, convenient and clean. It was all of these things. We spent little time in the hotel as we were out most of the time. It provided exactly what we needed for a trip to Venice and I was more than happy and would recommend to anyone.
  • Most famous water way of Venice. Thounds of people cross this water way every day. One building more famous than the other one. The end with the big church Salute and a nice view on the doge palace.
  • Pictures never set you up for how magnificent travelling down the Grand Canal is. On our first trip we took a water taxi from Marco Polo airport (I would recommend this, it's not to expensive). Arriving by Venice this way sets the scene for your trip. There is so much to see along the Grand Canal you could travel along it for years and always find something new.
  • Absolutely picturesque. I would advise entering Venice by train as the view exiting the station is such a stunning surprise compared to that of the bus terminal. The Grande Canale is a really beautiful spot, mind you, as is most of Venice. Worth a visit, especially with your partner.
  • Beautiful romantic city, nice cruises through the canals with boats or gondolas. The architecture is amazing, many historical sites, statues and museums. Lively city, full of commercial stores, cafe, bar and restaurants, one of the most popular destinations in Europe.
