Basilica di Santa Maria della Salute, Venice

4.6
Discover the city’s religious and artistic heritage at Basilica di Santa Maria della Salute, one of the landmark buildings on the Grand Canal. The history of this building goes back to the early 17th century, when the city experienced a devastating outbreak of the plague. As a votive offering for the people’s deliverance from this pestilence, the city vowed to build and dedicate a church to Our Lady of Health (or Deliverance). The church was designed in the then-fashionable Baroque style, and construction began in 1631. Most of the art housed inside the church bears some reference to the historic plague. The emblematic dome of this building was an important addition to the city’s skyline, said to have inspired numerous artists, including Canaletto and J.M.W. Turner, among many others. Drop by the church’s famous facade, which is embellished with 125 statues. • It is a bit of a trip to get there by walking and honestly not sure it was worth it. Nothing great to look at inside and while it is nice from a distance, up close it just looks dirty.  more »

  • The history, the culture, the romance is worth the train ride from Rome. The whole of Venice is spectacular and ridding through the canals is a must. Take the time to walk through the streets and over the little bridges to really get the feel of the place.
  • After a while you start looking for differences in the churches. You start looking at how much money the patron had to build a better church than the neighbor. This is a wonderful church. It's not as spectacular as some of the others, but still very nice.
  • Magnificent. My favourite part of venice. Such a beuatiful building and architecture. Definately worth visiting!
  • Amazing square and really nice views. The basilica is awesome with amazing architectural details. Take a moment to sit on the steps facing the river and relax!
  • The view from here is just beautiful. Emerald water bright colors. Awesome. When here do go to the end of the square and admire!
